the future looks GREAT!!!

Taylor and I are now the Logan family. We live in a basement now, but we have high ambitions of a home full of windows sometime in the near future. And in order to know where the Logan family might be headed in the DISTANT future, it’s a good idea to take a look at where we have been, so here are some pics to let you know some more about little Logans (and Registers!)in all of their glory. We fit into a few different categories.

#1. We are stylish

Thats me on the right with stone-washed denim overalls. Since marrying Taylor, style has definitely become a priority.

That's my wife on the right. Bear in mind that this photo wasn't taken anywhere close to Halloween.

Another thing to know about the Logan/Register families is that we don't always fit in. I know that might seem a little bit like it connects with style, but there are subtle differences. When the crowd was doing one thing, you were quite likely to see little Taylor or little Luke doing something different, and I mean WAY different. Just take a look for yourself to get an idea how-

#2: We don't fit in.

While everyone else spent their early childhood on swimteams and eating tater tots in the school cafeteria, I spent a few years growing up in Europe where we wore swimsuits, pictured to the left, and found out that mayonnaise is sold in toothpaste-like containers. Ew.

When we moved back to the good old US and A for my third grade year, I quickly learned that speedo swimsuits just weren't cool.

As for my wife, when all of the other teenage girls dressed up in funky and revealing costumes for Halloween, this is the kind of stuff that Taylor would wear.

It not a bad thing to stand out in this way, but it definitely put us in the "we don't fit in" category. So in the DISTANT future, when there are more Logans on the scene, they might have their moments of not fitting in with the crowd, and hopefully these pictures will still be around to help make awkward childhoods a little more bearable.

Another thing that distinguishes us from the crowd and might point towards where the Logan family is headed WAY in the future is:

#3: We wear glasses.

We're talking generations on the Register side. However, fashion has come a long way and glasses can even be stylish and trendy, but when looking towards the future, unfortunately Logans will need corrective lenses (Sorry for the picture Deb!) Note: Wal-Mart's vision center has not carried red-framed glasses for at least 13 years, citing "lack of product demand." There is also a rumor that Taylor's little brother Derek wore pink Minnie Mouse glasses. After much searching, I have not been able to come up with a picture to confirm Derek's claim. However, Deborah did state that he wore "flesh-colored" glasses.

As for me, I didn't realize I needed glasses until a little bit later in life, but when I finally became a regular 4-eyes (I refuse to get contacts by the way), I fell in nicely with the other Logans: Connie, Andy (that's my mom and dad) and pictured is my Grandmother on my dad's side. You might know her as "Grammy."

Other relatives thatw ear glasses on my side are my Grandfather on my mom's side, my cousins Mary and Ken, and Uncle Gordy.

It's good to take a trip down memory lane and look at how far Taylor and I have come. She has come so far in learning style thanks to her mother Deb, who gets it from her mother (Taylor's Grandmother) Becky. And, Taylor has been kind enough to throw away all of my stone washed denim and Birkenstocks and replaced them with Banana Republic jeans (5 years old now and still awesome!) and New Balance running shoes. Now, we dare might say that we officially "fit in" with most of America in terms of style, but it was a rough-and-tumble way to get this far.

I wanted to leave you guys with one last image . When looking at the future, the VERY EXCEEDINGLY DISTANT future, I want you to keep in mind that the future does look great. We cite my niece, Lila McCoy as proof:

Halloween

Today I have the day off. I woke up this morning and instead of doing work, I immersed myself (shamefully) into the one and only facebook while enjoying my cup of coffee. One thing that is new on facebook is the old pictures that pop up on the right that said "you haven't seen this picture in awhile" or something like that. Anyway, this morning, in due time for Halloween again...I found myself laughing very loudly by myself at the picture that popped up.

A little background, Stacey and I are the queens of themed parties. Anytime there is an event to be in costume for...we go above and beyond. Here are some glimpses of past theme parties...

Last, 2 years ago Stacey and I as Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen at the Valentine's couples party...

3 years ago at the muder mystery party, "Murder at the Juice Joint."

This was Stacey and I's costumes at Emily's freaky Friday party our senior year of college...

So, you can imagine my surprise and horror when this picture popped up on my facebook this morning....

Yes, Stacey and I actually thought it would be funny to go as "Double Bubble" to a Halloween Party at bar in downtown Greensboro. Now, due to other events that evening (Adam's wedding) we had little time to prepare and execute for our outfits...but still WHAT WERE WE THINKING? We looked ridiculous. I am still embarassed when I think about it.

Everyone else is wearing cute and well thought out outfits...police officer, Dorthy, Howard Stern, Chiquita Banana even! And I am wearing a pink bathing suit top with pink pants, a pink visor, and a pink freaking Vera Bradley bag.

This year I will not fully be celebrating Halloween, but for our Tuesday night dinner this week (Fall themed) I did give lady gaga a go...and thought about and executed my outfit in 10 minutes. It worked out and gaga did her thing! So here is to leaving past mistakes behind and moving ahead...

Top 5 "we caught you" pics from our Wedding Day

Luke and I just got the chance to sit down and look at all the photos from our wedding! Greg, our photographer did a great job and I highly recommend using his services; however, there were several unfortunate photos that were caught as well. Enjoy!

Honorable mentions go to:

Houston's incredible dance moves

and, Stacey's crazy face (center left bridesmaid)

And the Top Five

5. One of our upstairs housemates, Jess, is quite the looker, but maybe not quite the dancer (the girl in the pink tank, center). Maybe that fried oreo was just a little too distracting?! The funny thing is pics of Jess dancing could almost make all 5 of these photos.

4. I'm not really sure what is going on in the photo below. Up to your interpretation I guess.

3. John, our friend Haley's husband, rockin' out to Michael Jackson...I hope?

2. This is actually a progression of photos...note Houston's hand (on the left).

1. Getting ready, you never be too careful (check out the jorts in the background)

Entertainment Budget

Luke and I are newly weds, and with every pair of newly weds comes a new budget and a lot of new expenses and not a lot to work with. It is funny to see what our projected budget was, and then to see the difference in the actual. For example, the Food Czar (see below post) always goes over the allotted money for the grocery store; however, I am OK with that because unlike Luke I need more to eat than easymac and sweet 16 doughunts. There are several areas in our budget we well over...but nothing beats our entertainment. Every month we go far beyond our dictated amount (thank you David Ramsey) of only $100 per month.

What David Ramsey, who does financial planning classes at a lot of churches, does not know is that my husband and I happen to be the most social, extroverted, and chatty people you may ever meet (note the # of our bridal party). Therefore, more money is needed in our entertainment budget than the "average" couple. We need our happy hours, wedding weekends, friend reunions, girls' trips, family vacations, etc. This is a need for us, not a want. We say "no" to cable, fast internet, and even Luke's dental insurance (and health insurance until 2 weeks ago) to help provide for our needs.

So, when the opportunity arose to go to the Avett Brothers concert in Charlottesville last weekend...we jumped at the chance to go over our entertainment budget once again! And, as always, it was well worth it!

I have been a fan of the Avett Brothers for about 4 years now, and Luke recently started enjoying their tunes. This was our second time actually seeing the Avett Brothers, only the first time was under different circumstances. Luke's neighbor growing up, Jerry, has a son in law, Pete, who is the tour manager for the band. Sadly, Luke's neighbor passed away last year so we went home for the funeral. During the funeral they had special music as most do, but when they started playing I immediately recognized the voices and to my surprise I realized it was the Avett Brothers themselves. They sang a beautiful rendition of "I'll Fly Away" and everyone around me was in tears. This is terrible, but all I think about was the fact that the Avett Brothers were playing!! Matt, Luke's brother, kindly suggested I not try to get an autograph, although I was tempted. Jerry, you are loved and really missed by Luke.

Anyway, the concert this past weekend was beyond incredible! Luke and I had a great time and he even packed me the sweetest picnic ever to enjoy before the show (flowers, hot chocolate, tuna fish sandwiches, the whole nine yards). I highly recommend you spending the cash to see them in concert, even if it does go over your entertainment allotment for the month. Here's to cheap spending in November hopefully!

Who knew?

Hey guys!

It's been a pretty exciting week here in the cellar- we had a wine and cheese party on Friday, hosted a JMU alum for Homecoming this past weekend, and an amazing Avett Brothers concert at the Charlottesville pavilion this past Sunday.

Now its time for my chest to swell, place one foot in front of the other, and do my duties as a husband: grocery shop. Though you might not realize it, Taylor and I did some pre-marriage counseling before the wedding, and everything went awesome. In fact, we took an extremely detailed compatibility test and had our results analyzed by a staff psychologist, and on a scale from 1-5, we had a 5. Despite that indicator of success, we did have one area that wasn't quite resolved before each of you had the chance to see us at the alter. Grocery shopping.

So after 2 months of wedded bliss, the crown has been passed, making me czar of all nutritional intake for the Logan household. This is not a task that I take lightly. It is quite a task to say no to sweet 16 donuts and opt for light yogurt instead. Equally difficult is it to say no to the pork rinds and yes to the sun chips (pork rinds are another guilty escape for me) but no, I am married and determined to look out for not only my best interests, but that of the entire Logan family.

With the roadmap to success in my hand, I check off every small victory while selecting the best deli meats that Kroger has to offer. Little old ladies dive out of their way when they see me, mr logan, husband and nutritional czar, reaching for a can of campbells soup, mexican enchilada and not chicken noodle. House wives and small children duck and cower when they see the Logan family shopping cart, chock full of red onions and goat cheese for fanciful and healthy dinner salads.

But every great man faces challenges. Sadly I confess, mine is the grocery store. With every small item checked, and food lion MVP card scanned, I checkout, knowing that the Logan family will indeed live to eat another week. Much to my chagrin, when whipping up a small, southern side item of corn bread prepared in a 12" cast iron skillet, my shopping talents were flattened like an old tire. The corn meal was NOT self rising, and the cornbread a disaster.

While washing the dishes after a delicious goat cheese and red onion dinner salad, like the small childrens cartoon Dora, I made another discovery: that bizzare smell that illicits images of public restrooms was simply inexpensive antibacterial hand soap. Though our dishes are sure to be bacteria free, the food czar takes this as a blow to his reputation.

Who knew that grocery shopping required such minute attention to detail? Soaps come in all varieties- from antibacterial hand to powdered Tide. Corn meal comes in white, yellow, and self rising. Milk is 2%, 1%, or skim. Cheddars are sharp or extra sharp. Pizzas are thin crust or self rising. Diet sodas are pepsi or coke, and eggs are white or brown, medium large or extra large, and always, ALWAYS inspected before placing them upon the checkout conveyor belt.

Peace and Blessings.

The Register Way

Register Family vacations consist of mom drinking a bloody mary at 10:00 am, sitting on our butts on the beach all day (except for the daily bocce ball game), eating junk food of all kinds, filling up the cooler half-way through the day...you get the point. We are known for our "exotic" vacations which have taken place in St. Kitts, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, Hawaii, etc.

One time we tried to go on a family ski trip in Vail, Colorado. We quickly learned our lesson and vowed to never have an active vacation again. We lost mom and found her in the woods lying down on her back crying, and my dad forced me to go down a really scary hill because he said if I was scared mom would never make it. Needless to say, mom spent the rest of our vacation in prime ski country, in the lodge, yet again drinking bloody marys.

So, my family came to visit for a lil' vacation in the burg a couple weeks ago and we went our 2nd ever family hike! The last time we all went on a hike together Dereck was 6 and kept on hiding behind trees and trying to scare us. This was getting old, so while he was hiding behind a tree, the rest of us decided to hide behind a tree as well and he came out to scare us and no one was there. He SCREAMED bloody murder and once again we vowed to never go on a hike again.

Luckily, we were able to muster up some confidence and had another go at hiking. After an hour of complaining about the long drive (it was a mere hour) and getting car sick going up the winding roads, we made it to our trail. Unfortunately we got confused and took the wrong way to the top (we took the route you were supposed to use on the way down), which meant a steep climb for a good 20 minutes. I almost puked. Dereck was sick. And, it almost ended in disaster yet again.

But the Lord was on our side and the Register family made it to the top and had a great time hanging out and taking pictures! These are some pics from our adventure on Skyline Drive!

Of course no Register family vacation is complete without some form of junk food. On the way home the guys had to reward themselves with some slow cooked ribs they discovered were being made on the side of the highway...

Living in Big Love

A few days ago, Taylor introduced you to our house, "Big Love." Today's post is all about living in Big Love. You see, I live in a house with 6 girls and a cat. That might not appear that strange from the outset, but what makes it even weirder is that I grew up with two brothers.
Living in Big Love a pretty sweet setup if you are into matching outfits and themed dinners at least once a week. Weekly, the house has a "family dinner" and it always has a theme. For example, this past week the dinner fell on Columbus day, but how the heck do you celebrate Columbus day? Tay thought it would be a great idea if everyone dressed as an explorer, and bring a dish from their home- country (see above pic). It went over great, but like every week, I had to work during family dinner. Being away from family dinners will not be a lifelong habit.
Living in Big Love and being married means that home is completely different than what I am used to in every way. Like I said, I grew up as the youngest of three brothers. That meant that what I am used to is BB gun fights, brutal fights over who had use of the living room couch, and shows like car and driver on the television.
Outrageous roommates in college meant Presh's naked pullups first thing in the morning, Raman noodle wrestling fights, and shows like "I Love New York." Rommates in Big Love means immediate trips to Klines Ice Cream Bar for chocolate ice cream, cute outfits, and weekly "Gray's Anatomy" viewing parties.
However, I do have a few other outlets here in the 'Burg. Paul, the administrator for all things fraternity and sorority on the JMU campus has become a pretty fun guy to do things like trivia or not watch Gray's Anatomy. We are also a part of a small-group through our church and it's been awesome to get together with some of those guys to do things like play on Harrisonburg's only free par-three golf course. Or eat buffalo wings. Or watch football. And don't forget about Jake Kave, who dates one of the girls upstairs and played the mandolin for our wedding. We do things like talk about guns and talk about Joe Paterno.

Not exactly Julie or Julia

I think it was last summer that the movie Julie and Julia came out? I thought the previews looked terrible and never saw it, but from what I hear it was a pretty good movie. Anyway, I know it is about Julia Childs starting her cooking career and what not. Well, I am here to say that I am not the next Julie or Julia.

A lot of my friends have been embracing their 20 somethings to become good cooks and get creative with their meals. Specifically, my friend Linds. Everything she makes is phenomenal! And she only recently figured out this gift about 3 years ago. Anyway, I try to be a good cook...but lets be honest for the most part...I'm just not.

2 nights ago I tried to make one of my favorite meals to order at restaurants, chicken marsala, for the second time. It sucked. The chicken was awful and the sauce was bland. It was so bad I had to take a picture of it. Not exactly what I was going for...

Side Note: Luke, my amazing husband, ate all of his. I think he felt bad for me because I really wanted it to turn out yummy!

Here is what it should look like:

But just to prove that SOMETIMES I make a decent meal, I thought I could share some pictures of when my family came in town last weekend. Luke and I worked in the kitchen together and all and all--the meal was pretty tasty! We even used our new china and cake plate! True Southern bell style. Hope you had a great birthday, mom!

p.s. if you have a good and EASY Marsala recipe...send it my way!
